Regardless of ethnicity, a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina is often
identified in English as a Bosnian. The terms Herzegovinian and
Bosnian are maintained as a regional rather than ethnic distinction,
and Herzegovina has no precisely defined borders of its own.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is an emerging republic with two
legislative houses. A tripartite presidency is nominally the head of
state; a representative of the international community functions as
the final authority in this capacity.
War of 1877 – 78, Bosnia and Herzegovina were assigned to
Austria-Hungary, which annexed the combined territories in 1908.
Never particularly robust, Bosnia and Herzegovina's economy was
shattered by the civil war that broke out after independence.
Historically, the economy has depended on agriculture, although it now
provides less than half of the country's food needs.
Bosnia and Herzegovina's declaration of sovereignty in October 1991
was followed by a declaration of independence from the former
Yugoslavia on 3 March 1992 after a referendum boycotted by ethnic
   Serbs.
January 2010, Bosnia and Herzegovina assumed a nonpermanent seat on
the UN Security Council for the 2010-11 term.

of the territory); the region called Herzegovina is contiguous to
Croatia and Montenegro, and traditionally has been

Josip Broz Tito, with Bosnia and Herzegovina as one of six republics
   in the Yugoslav federation.
After Tito died in 1980, Yugoslavia's unraveling was hastened by
Slobodan Milosevic's rise to power in 1986. Milosevic's embrace of
Serb nationalism led to intrastate ethnic strife.
Bosnia and Herzegovina ranked next to The Former Yugoslav Republic of
Macedonia as the poorest republic in the old Yugoslav federation.
Although agriculture is almost all in private hands, farms are small
and inefficient, and the republic traditionally is a net importer of
   food.

Serbia, which had claims on Bosnia and Herzegovina, became embittered.
The hostility between the two countries climaxed in the assassination

a Serbian nationalist. This event precipitated the start of World War
   I (1914–1918).

At the end of the 20th century, the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina was
synonymous with humanity's basest cruelties. Millions around the world
watched with horror as broadcast news brought the unthinkable into our
lives: as many as 200,000 dead. More than a million displaced or
forced to flee into neighboring countries.

years, our feelings are mixed, of course. Sadness and nostalgia from
one side, and pride and satisfaction on the other.
