Cyprus was the site of early Phoenician and Greek colonies. For
centuries its rule passed through many hands. It fell to the Turks in
1571, and a large Turkish colony settled on the island.
Settled for more than 10 millennia, Cyprus stands at a
cultural, linguistic, and historic crossroads between Europe and Asia.
Today Cyprus is a popular tourist destination for visitors
from Europe, favoured by honeymooners (as befits the legendary home of
Aphrodite, the ancient Greek goddess of love), bird-watchers drawn by
the island's diversity of migratory species, and other vacationers.
1960 Cyprus became independent of Britain (it had been a crown
colony since 1925) as the Republic of Cyprus.

The name Cyprus has a somewhat uncertain etymology. A likely
explanation is that it comes from the Greek word for the Mediterranean
cypress tree, κυπάρισσος (kypárissos). Another suggestion is that the
name derives from the Greek name of the henna plant, κύπρος (kýpros).

Cyprus, a rather extraordinary island of diversity, has as its claim
to fame the only divided capital in the world (ever since the Berlin
Wall fell). The contentious territorial disagreements between North
(Turkish) and South (Greek) Cyprus were brought to UN-led discussions
in 2002.
Byzantine and Greek empires (all of which invaded Cyprus at some
point), make up for this poorly realized development. And away from
the coast, Cyprus' natural attributes stand strong; at Troödos Massif,
stunning mountains provide the ideal setting for a skiing trip.
The earliest confirmed site of human activity on Cyprus is
Aetokremnos, situated on the south coast, indicating that
hunter-gatherers were active on the island from around 10,000 BC, with
settled village communities dating from 8,200 BC.
