Macedonia is, of course, different and it was created in modern times

Macedonia had been a mixed and ungovernable region of the Ottoman
Empire, so much so that nineteenth century thinkers wrote of the
insoluble “Macedonian Question.” My view has always been that this
   country is the answer.
Macedonia, which had been the poorest republic, would return to
Yugoslavia within two years. Under the circumstances, this was not an
outlandish expectation. The young country was hit with embargos,
daunted by sanctions, and wars in the region.

thousands of refugees poured across the border. But Macedonia defied
the odds, and over these past twenty years, its citizens have proven
   their resilience.

Greece Criticizes Macedonia Over Alexander The Great Statue
   =
June 16, 2011 SKOPJE - Greece has criticized Macedonia's erection of
a bronze statue of Alexander the Great as a provocation that could
further strain relations with the country with which it is locked in
EU because it regards the use of the name Macedonia - which is also
the name of its northernmost province - as a claim on Greek history
and antique heritage, as well as possible territorial aspirations by
   Macedonia on Greek territory.
Macedonia" when it joined the United Nations in 1993.
Greek pressure also led to Macedonia changing its flag in 1995 because
of Athens' objections to the use of the "Vergina Sun," a symbol linked
to the ancient Kingdom of Macedon.
