Malta is an island country in the Mediterranean Sea that lies
south of the island of Sicily, Italy. The country is an archipelago,
with only the three largest islands (Malta, Għawdex or Gozo, and
   Kemmuna or Comino) being inhabited.
Although small, Malta has a long and rich history, with evidence for
habitation going back to the Neolithic era (4th millennium B.C.).
Knights Hospitallers and Knights of Malta, took over sovereign control
of Malta in 1530, and by 1533 the Order had built a hospital at Birgu
(one of the Three Cities) to care for the sick.
Malta is one of the most densely populated countries in the world,
with about 3,400 inhabitants per square mile (1,307 per square
kilometer). This compares with about 55 per square mile (21 per square
   kilometer) for the United States.
Malta was first colonized by the Phoenicians. Subsequently, Romans,
Arabs, Normans, the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem of
Rhodes and of Malta, and the British have influenced Maltese life and
   culture to varying degrees.
religion of Malta; however, it also guarantees full liberty of
conscience and freedom of worship and a number of faiths have places
of worship on the island. Malta has two official languages-Maltese (a
Semitic language with much vocabulary borrowed from Sicilian Italian)
   and English.
local language) to the Sicilian-inspired cuisine, Malta is a microcosm
of the Mediterranean. Few European countries have such concentrated
history, architecture and, yes, beaches in so tiny an area.
over the centuries, but be in no doubt: Malta is not just a notional
outpost of Italy or a relic of colonial Britain. This island nation
(all 316 sq km of it, comprising the islands of Malta, Gozo and
Comino) has a quirky character all of its own.

   Brief History
   -
Archeological evidence shows that the islands of Malta were inhabited
   already in 5200 B.C.
When their Empire fell, Malta came under
influence of Carthage. During the First Punic War of 218 BC, tensions
led the Maltese people to rebel against Carthage and turn control of
their garrison over to the Romans.
Great Britain formally acquired possession of Malta in 1814. The
island staunchly supported the UK through both world wars and remained
in the Commonwealth when it became independent in 1964. A decade later
   Malta became a republic.
Malta became an EU member in May
2004 and began using the euro as currency in 2008.
